When Donald Trump was campaigning for the presidency, he promised to crackdown on the illegal immigration problem that plagued this country throughout Barack Obama’s time in office. Now, Trump is following through on this promise in a big way.
The Political Insider reported that over 600 people have been arrested by the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) over the past 7 days in 11 states.
“The crackdown on illegal criminals is merely the keeping of my campaign promise,” Trump wrote on Twitter on Sunday. “Gang members, drug dealers & others are being removed!”
However, Gillian Christensen, acting press secretary for the Department of Homeland Security, said that the operations leading to the arrests were routine.
“The focus of these targeted enforcement operations is consistent with the routine, targeted arrests carried out by ICE’s Fugitive Operations Teams on a daily basis,” she said.
Forty illegal immigrants were arrested in New York City as part of a national action that was planned several weeks ago, Immigration and Customs Enforcement said.
“New York was late to the game,” said an agency official who added that the arrests had not been impromptu and had been planned around individuals’ routines.
“All these people are in violation of some sort of immigration law,” the official said, adding that some of their convictions included rape and aggravated assault. “We’re not going out to Walmart to check papers — we know who we are going out to seek.”
